The location on the beachfront on the beautiful Pataua estuary is beautiful, very peaceful and quiet, perfect to get away and work on your creative pursuits uninterrupted by normal daily life. The self-funded (residents secure their own funding) and self-catering (residents purchase their own food and prepare their own meals) studio space feature an open plan room containing a queen bed, living room, kitchen, with a separate room as a studio space, a private bathroom and shared use of washing machine with the other residency occupant. There are two residency spaces available which offer the same facilities and are suitable for 1 artist in each space. (Only clean work to be undertaken in studio space, outdoor space on lawn available for other work) Services available include use of a printer/copier, library of art reference books, work table, large grassed outdoor area for outdoor working, bed linens, towels and basic kitchen supplies.
The residency aims to further connections with the local community and artists are encouraged to provide engagement and exchange of ideas with the local community.
There would be the opportunity for the residency recipient to join with Sally Lush, an artist and curator and developer of the residency to visit local artists and arts venues in keeping with their field of interest. Depending on the artist’s discipline and field of interest guided visits and introductions could be arranged to Whangarei Art Museum, Hangar Gallery, Megan Dickinson Gallery, Hihiaua Cultural Centre, Quarry Arts Centre, Quarry Gardens, Helena Bay Gallery and more.

Pataua South is a small beachside community located on the East coast of Northland, 30 minutes drive east of Whangarei. There are shops are available for coffee, food supplies, takeaways, petrol, alcohol, a hotel and restaurant etc 10 minutes drive away at Parua Bay. Own transport is required as location is rural and no public transport is available.
The self-funded (residents secure their own funding) and self-catering (residents purchase their own food and prepare their own meals) residency is available for periods of minimum 3 weeks to 3 months all year at a cost of $400 per week. A non refundable deposit of 2 weeks is payable to confirm your booking with the balance to be paid upon commencement of the residency.
Assistance can be given to apply for funding by Sally Lush the creator of this opportunity. Sally Lush, an artist and curator with over 30 years of involvement in the arts in New Zealand has experience including exhibiting sculpture and painting, managing retail art galleries, managing community art centres, mentoring artists and curating sculpture exhibitions. Other information Residents are welcome to have partners stay for weekends only. Sorry no dogs allowed on property. You will need to have your own insurance for personal, personal property and health cover and sign an Insurance waiver.
